About this product
MOC3021 is a 6-pin DIP optocoupler with a zero-crossing triac driver output. It electrically isolates a microcontroller from mains-powered triac circuits and switches the triac on in sync with the AC zero crossing to reduce electrical noise. It is used in AC lamp, fan and heater control circuits.

Frequently asked questions
How do I drive the input LED from a microcontroller?
Connect a series current-limiting resistor to the input LED, sized for the LED forward voltage (1.15 V) and the trigger current given in the datasheet, and switch it from a GPIO pin or a transistor. Keep the input and mains sides isolated.
Can it switch a mains load directly?
No. It is designed to drive the gate of a power triac, not the load itself. The triac then switches the mains load. Follow the datasheet for the gate resistor and snubber network, especially for inductive loads.
