MCP2515 is a stand-alone CAN controller that connects any microcontroller to a CAN bus through a simple SPI interface. It adds one-shot transmission, data-byte filtering and a start-of-frame output, and it is pin and function compatible with the MCP2510. A separate CAN transceiver is required on the bus side.

Do I need a separate transceiver with the MCP2515?
Yes. The MCP2515 is a controller only and does not drive the CAN bus directly. Pair it with a CAN transceiver such as the MCP2551 or TJA1050 to connect to the physical bus.
How do I wire it to an Arduino or other MCU?
Connect the SPI lines (CS, SCK, SI, SO) to the MCU's SPI pins, and use the INT output for interrupts if needed. The chip also needs a crystal oscillator; check the datasheet for the supported crystal frequency and load capacitor values.
