About this product
The MAX1487ESA is a low-power half-duplex transceiver for RS-485 and RS-422 serial links, with one driver and one receiver in a single package. It runs from a single 5 V supply and can transmit at up to 2.5 Mbps. It connects microcontrollers and PCs to long-distance industrial bus networks, with short-circuit current limiting and thermal shutdown protecting the driver.

Frequently asked questions
How do I control transmit and receive on this chip?
Its DE (driver enable) pin turns the driver on for transmitting when driven high, and its RE (receiver enable) pin enables the receiver when driven low. Because it is half-duplex, the MCU must switch direction using these pins.
Do I need termination resistors on the RS-485 bus?
For long cables or multi-node buses, RS-485 is normally terminated with a 120 Ω resistor at each end of the bus, as the standard recommends. Short point-to-point links often do not need termination.
