About this product
The 74HC595 is an 8-bit serial-in, parallel-out shift register with a storage latch. It lets a microcontroller control eight outputs using only three signal pins, and is commonly used to drive LED arrays, 7-segment displays and relays. Several devices can be chained to add more outputs.

Frequently asked questions
How many microcontroller pins does the 74HC595 need?
Three main control lines are used: serial data (DS), shift clock (SH_CP) and latch clock (ST_CP). Output enable (OE) and master reset (MR) are optional and can be tied to fixed levels.
Can I chain several 74HC595 devices together?
Yes. Connect the serial output Q7' of one device to the DS input of the next, and share the clock and latch lines. This adds eight outputs per device while still using only three microcontroller pins.
