About this product
The PS2501-1 is a single-channel optocoupler in a 4-pin plastic DIP package. It combines a GaAs infrared LED with an NPN silicon phototransistor to pass signals across an electrically isolated barrier. It is used in power supply feedback, telephone and FAX equipment, FA/OA equipment and programmable logic controller inputs and outputs.

Frequently asked questions
How is the PS2501-1 wired?
Pin 1 is the LED anode, pin 2 the LED cathode, pin 3 the phototransistor emitter and pin 4 the phototransistor collector. Put a current-limiting resistor in series with the LED input, and connect a pull-up resistor from the collector to the output logic supply. Verify the pinout against the datasheet for your exact revision.
Can it isolate a microcontroller from a higher-voltage circuit?
Yes. Signals pass through light, so the input and output sides share no electrical connection. The listed isolation voltage is 5000 Vrms; do not exceed it, and keep the creepage and clearance on the PCB appropriate for the voltage used.
