Can I connect it directly to a 3.3 V microcontroller?
The MCP2551 is specified for a 5 V supply, and its logic inputs are referenced to VDD. A 3.3 V output may not reach the required high threshold, so use a level shifter or a transceiver designed for 3.3 V I/O.
What else is needed to build a CAN bus?
The transceiver needs a CAN controller, such as a microcontroller with a built-in CAN peripheral or an external SPI CAN controller. Each end of the bus also needs a 120 Ω termination resistor.
