Can I use it as a high-side switch from a 12V supply?
Yes. Place it between the supply and the load with the source connected to the supply. To turn it on, the gate must be pulled below the source by roughly 10 V. A level shifter or NPN/NMOS driver stage is usually needed to do this from a 3.3 V or 5 V microcontroller pin.
Is it a pin-compatible replacement for the through-hole IRF9Z34N?
The pinout (Gate, Drain, Source) matches the TO-220 IRF9Z34N, but this is the surface-mount TO-263 package, so the PCB footprint must be designed for D2PAK. It cannot be inserted into a TO-220 hole without a footprint change.
