How do I connect this LCD to an Arduino?
Connect VDD to 5V and VSS to GND, then wire RS, R/W, E and the data lines to digital pins. Use the VO pin with a potentiometer between 5V and GND to set contrast, and drive R/W to GND if you only write to the display.
Can I use this display with fewer microcontroller pins?
Yes. The HD44780 controller supports 4-bit mode, which uses only DB4 to DB7 for data, so it needs fewer I/O pins. Most libraries, including LiquidCrystal, support this mode.
