About this product
The MAX232 is a dual RS-232 driver/receiver IC that converts 5 V TTL/CMOS logic levels to RS-232 voltage levels and back. It is used to connect a microcontroller UART to a PC serial port or legacy serial devices. This listing is the surface-mount version.

Frequently asked questions
Does the MAX232 need external components?
Yes. The original MAX232 uses a charge pump that needs four external capacitors, typically 1 µF each, to generate the RS-232 voltage levels. Check the datasheet of your exact variant for the recommended values.
Can I connect RS-232 lines directly to an Arduino or ESP32 pin?
No. RS-232 levels are much higher than 3.3 V or 5 V logic and can damage the microcontroller. Connect the TTL side of the MAX232 to the UART TX and RX pins, and the RS-232 side to the DB9 or serial connector.
