A two-way converter module that links the TTL serial interface of a microcontroller to an RS-485 network in both directions. It works from 3.3 V to 5 V and is commonly used in industrial automation to connect controllers to RS-485 devices over cable runs of up to about 800 m.

The 800 m figure is the maximum listed for the module. The achievable distance depends on baud rate, cable quality and termination. Lower baud rates and twisted-pair cable give better results over long distances.
