About this product
The PC817 is a 4-pin optocoupler that transfers a signal from an LED input to a phototransistor output while keeping the two sides electrically isolated. It is rated for 5000Vrms isolation and is used to separate low-voltage microcontroller circuits from high-voltage circuits. It is commonly found in switching power supplies, feedback loops and interface isolation.

Frequently asked questions
How do I drive the LED side?
Use a series resistor on the input LED to keep the forward current below the 50 mA maximum. Many designs use a lower current, such as 10 to 20 mA, for reliable switching.
Can it switch a mains load directly?
No. The output transistor only handles small currents (50 mA collector limit), so use it to drive a relay, a triac driver or a MOSFET on the load side.
