About this product
The MPSA13 is an NPN Darlington transistor in a TO-92 plastic package. The Darlington configuration gives very high current gain, so it can be driven from a low-current source such as a microcontroller pin. It is used for relay, LED and small-motor drive, and in sensor interface circuits.

Frequently asked questions
Why does the MPSA13 have a higher base-emitter voltage drop than a single transistor?
A Darlington pair has two base-emitter junctions in series, so the base-emitter drop is roughly 1.2 to 1.5 V instead of about 0.7 V. Make sure your drive voltage is high enough to fully turn it on.
Can the MPSA13 drive a relay directly from a microcontroller?
Yes, for a relay coil within its current limit, since the Darlington gain is high. Place a flyback diode across the relay coil to protect the transistor from inductive voltage spikes.
