Frequently asked questions
Can I drive it directly from a 3.3 V or 5 V microcontroller pin?
Not reliably. The IRF740N is not a logic-level MOSFET and needs about 10 V on the gate for full conduction. Use a gate driver or a logic-level MOSFET for direct microcontroller control.
Does it need a heatsink?
At currents close to the rated value, a heatsink is recommended. Power loss depends on RDS(on) and the load current, so check the thermal data in the datasheet for your operating point.
