IRF540S is an N-channel power MOSFET in a TO-263 (D2PAK) surface-mount package, rated for 100 V and 28 A. Frequently asked questions
Can I drive it from a 3.3V microcontroller pin?
Not directly. The gate threshold is in the 2 V to 4 V range and full conduction needs about 10 V on the gate. Use a gate driver, a level-shifting transistor stage, or a logic-level MOSFET.
Does it need a heatsink for motor loads?
It depends on current and switching losses. At high continuous current, the device dissipates heat through its tab and PCB copper. Use a suitably sized copper area or heatsink, and keep the current well below the 28 A rating for reliable operation.
