The HC-SR04 is an ultrasonic ranging module that measures distance by timing the echo of a 40 kHz pulse. With a range of about 2 cm to 500 cm and 1 cm resolution, it is widely used in obstacle-avoidance robots, distance alarms and level measurement projects. It has four pins: VCC, Trig, Echo and GND.

Can I use the HC-SR04 with a 3.3 V board like ESP32?
The Echo pin outputs 5 V logic, so use a voltage divider or a level shifter before connecting it to a 3.3 V GPIO. The Trig input generally works with 3.3 V logic.
How do I get a distance reading?
Send a trigger pulse of about 10 µs on Trig, then measure the duration of the high pulse on Echo. The distance in centimetres is roughly the echo time in microseconds divided by 58.
