About this product
The BTA40 is a 40 A, 600 V triac from ST in a RD91 plastic molded package. Triacs are bidirectional thyristors used to switch AC loads such as lamps, heaters and motors, and they are controlled by a gate trigger signal. Suitable for AC power control projects, provided that proper isolation and heatsinking are used.

Frequently asked questions
Can I switch mains voltage with this triac?
The part is rated for 600 V, but switching mains requires an isolated gate trigger circuit, such as an opto-isolated driver, and a safe enclosure. Never work on live mains without proper protection.
Does it need a heatsink?
For loads approaching the rated current, the triac should be mounted on a heatsink. Check the ST datasheet for thermal limits before selecting a heatsink.
