About this product

The BTA40-600B is a bidirectional triac rated 600 V off-state and 40 A RMS on-state, used to switch AC loads in power control circuits. It has a non-repetitive surge current rating of 400 A and 420 A (50/60 Hz) and is supplied in the RD91 package. Use a suitable gate trigger circuit and a snubber for inductive loads.

How is a triac wired in an AC circuit?

A triac has two main terminals, MT1 and MT2, plus a gate. The load is connected in series with MT1 and MT2 across the AC supply, and the gate is driven by a trigger circuit such as an opto-triac. Confirm the pinout in the datasheet for your package.

Does it need protection for inductive loads?

Yes. Inductive loads such as motors can cause the triac to misfire, so use an RC snubber across the triac. At higher currents, also provide a suitable heatsink and follow mains safety practices.
