How is a BT151 different from a TRIAC?
The BT151 is an SCR, so it conducts in one direction only. For full-wave AC control you need two SCRs in reverse parallel, a bridge rectifier, or a TRIAC instead.
How do I turn it on and off?
Apply a short positive gate current pulse between gate and cathode while the anode is positive to turn it on. It stays on until the current falls below its holding level, such as at the AC zero crossing. Use a series gate resistor to limit gate current.
