Can I connect it directly to an Arduino pin?
It is not recommended. Its rating of 1.5 V to 3 V is below the 5 V output of an Arduino, and microcontroller pins supply limited current. Use a lower-voltage supply and a transistor or MOSFET switch instead.
Should I add a diode across the motor?
Yes, when switching it with a transistor. A flyback diode across the motor terminals protects the switching device from the voltage spike produced when the motor is turned off.
