Does the laser measure the temperature?
No. The lasers only show the center of the measured spot. The temperature is read from the infrared sensor, so aim the meter at the target and keep the spot inside the surface you want to measure.
Why do shiny metal surfaces give wrong readings?
Infrared thermometers estimate temperature from emitted radiation, and shiny or reflective surfaces emit little of it. Use a matte tape or paint with known emissivity on the surface, or use a contact probe for more accurate results.
