About this product
A 12 A, 600 V bidirectional triac in a TO-220 package, used to switch AC loads with a small gate pulse. It is suited to lamp dimmers, fan and heater control and small AC motor switching. Add a snubber when driving inductive loads.

Frequently asked questions
Can an Arduino or ESP32 drive the BTA12 directly?
No. The gate needs isolation from mains and more current than a microcontroller pin provides. Use an optocoupler such as MOC3021 or MOC3041 with a gate resistor, and keep the low-voltage and mains sections separated.
When is a snubber needed?
A snubber, typically a resistor and capacitor in series across the triac, protects it from voltage spikes when switching inductive loads such as motors, transformers and solenoids. Resistive loads like heaters and incandescent lamps usually do not need one.
