About this product
A 16 A, 600 V bidirectional triac from NXP in a TO-220 package, designed for AC switching with a gate trigger signal. It is suited to higher-power lamp dimmers, heater control and AC motor switching. Use a snubber and proper isolation when driving mains loads.

Frequently asked questions
Can the BT139 be driven directly from a 3.3 V or 5 V logic pin?
No. The gate current is supplied from the mains side, so the logic pin must drive an optocoupler or a gate driver circuit with isolation. Do not connect the logic pin directly to the gate.
When is a snubber needed?
Use a snubber RC network across the triac with inductive loads such as motors, transformers and solenoids, to reduce voltage spikes. Resistive heaters and incandescent lamps usually do not require one.
