How much thermal paste should I apply?
Apply a small amount, roughly a pea-sized dot or a thin even layer, then mount the heatsink firmly so the paste spreads. Excess paste adds no benefit and can spread onto nearby parts.
Does thermal paste replace an insulating pad?
No. Thermal paste improves heat transfer but does not provide electrical isolation or mechanical mounting. When the component must be electrically isolated from the heatsink, use an insulating pad or washer in addition to the paste.
