How do I wire the phototransistor to a microcontroller?
Connect the collector to the supply through a pull-up resistor and the emitter to GND, then read the voltage at the junction with an analog pin. The IR emitter side also needs a series current-limiting resistor. Confirm the pin order and resistor values in the Vishay datasheet.
Why does the reading change with the surface color?
Reflectivity depends on the surface. Dark or matte surfaces reflect less infrared, giving a weaker signal, so test with your actual target surface and set the threshold in code accordingly.
