The PL2303HX is a low-cost USB-to-serial bridge controller that connects an RS-232 full-duplex asynchronous serial device to a USB host. Its drivers emulate a traditional COM port on most operating systems, and it consumes little power in operating and suspend modes, suiting mobile and embedded designs.

Do I need to install a driver?
Usually yes. If the device does not appear as a COM port, install the Prolific driver so applications can open it as a serial port.
Can I connect it directly to a 3.3V microcontroller?
Confirm the signal levels in the datasheet and in your board's documentation. RS-232 levels (about ±12V) are not compatible with 3.3V or 5V logic pins without a level converter.
