About this product
The OPB826S is a transmissive slotted optical switch with two phototransistor channels in one housing. An infrared emitter and detector face each other across a 2.54 mm slot, so an object passing through the gap interrupts the beam. It is used for position sensing, limit detection and reading rotary encoder discs.

Frequently asked questions
How do I wire the phototransistor output to a microcontroller?
Connect the emitter to GND and pull the collector up to VCC through a resistor, then read the collector node with a digital input. A value around 10 kΩ is a common starting point. The emitter-side LED must be driven through a series resistor so the current stays at or below 20 mA.
Can it be used to read a rotary encoder?
Yes. The two channels allow a slotted encoder disc to produce two offset signals, which is the basis of quadrature decoding for direction and position.
