About this product
The MC34063 is a DC-DC switching regulator controller that can be configured as a step-up, step-down or inverting converter with few external components. This SMD version uses the compact SOIC-8 package for small boards. It is widely used to build low-cost regulators, battery chargers and LED drivers in hobby and student projects.

Frequently asked questions
Can the MC34063 work as both a step-up and a step-down converter?
Yes. The MC34063 supports boost, buck and inverting topologies. The inductor, diode, timing capacitor and current-sense resistor values change with the topology, so use the formulas in the manufacturer datasheet for your configuration.
Does the MC34063 need an external transistor?
The internal switch is rated for about 1.5 A peak. For higher output current, an external power transistor with suitable drive circuitry is needed, as described in the datasheet.
