About this product
LM2596S-5V is a step-down (buck) switching regulator IC in a TO-263 surface-mount package, with a fixed 5 V output and up to 3 A load current. It switches at about 150 kHz, which allows smaller filter components than lower-frequency regulators. Used to derive a 5 V rail from a higher DC input such as a 12 V or 24 V supply.

Frequently asked questions
Does it work on its own or does it need external parts?
It needs external components as specified in its datasheet: an input capacitor, an output inductor, a catch (freewheeling) diode, and an output capacitor. The number of external parts is small, but they are required for correct operation.
What input voltage can I use?
The input must always be higher than the 5 V output, since this is a step-down regulator and cannot boost. The datasheet input range is 4.5 V to 40 V, so keep enough headroom above 5 V for the regulator to hold its output.
