About this product
The LM2596HVS-5 is a fixed 5 V, 3 A step-down (buck) switching regulator in a TO-263-5 surface-mount package. It reduces input voltages from about 4.5 V to 53 V down to 5 V, and is used to power microcontroller boards, sensors and other 5 V circuits. It cannot boost voltage.

Frequently asked questions
What minimum input voltage do I need for a 5V output?
The listing states the input must be at least about 1.5 V higher than the 5 V output, so use a supply of roughly 6.5 V or more. The regulator cannot boost, so a lower input will not produce 5 V.
Does the regulator work without external components?
No. Like other buck regulators, it needs the external inductor, input and output capacitors and freewheeling Schottky diode recommended in its datasheet. Use the values from the datasheet's typical application circuit.
