How do I set the output voltage?
Use Vout = 1.23 V × (1 + R2/R1), where R2 connects the output to the feedback pin and R1 connects the feedback pin to ground. For a 12 V output with R1 = 1 kΩ, R2 is about 8.76 kΩ.
Does it need external components to work?
Yes. It needs a catch diode (Schottky type is commonly used), an inductor selected from the datasheet for your output voltage and current, and input and output capacitors. The input voltage must be at least a couple of volts above the output.
