How do I use this diode as a 12V reference?
Connect a series resistor from the supply to the cathode, and take the reference from the cathode to anode. The resistor must limit current so the diode stays under its 500mW rating; at 12V that works out to a maximum of about 41mA.
Is the LL34 package suitable for hand soldering?
LL34 is a surface-mount glass package with two terminals. It is designed for PCB assembly, so use a fine tip, short contact times and pad-appropriate heat, and check the cathode band before placing it.
