About this product
The L9170S is a motor driver IC with two H-bridge channels, delivering up to 4.2 A continuous current per channel from a supply of 3.5 V to 15 V. It has built-in clamp diodes for inductive loads, TTL/CMOS-compatible inputs that connect directly to a microcontroller, and pin high-voltage protection. Rated for operation from 0 °C to 80 °C.

Frequently asked questions
Can it drive a stepper motor?
A dual H-bridge can drive a bipolar stepper motor with one bridge per coil, or two DC motors with direction control. Confirm the current limits and thermal behavior in the datasheet for your load.
Does it need external flyback diodes or a heatsink?
The clamp diodes are built in, so external flyback diodes are usually not needed for inductive loads. At 4.2 A, check the package thermal limits and add heat sinking as the datasheet recommends.
