How do I control speed and direction?
Direction is set by the IN1 to IN4 logic inputs. Speed is set with PWM on the enable pins (ENA and ENB). If the board has enable jumpers, remove them when you want to use PWM speed control.

Not usually. Motors can draw large current spikes, so supply them from a separate source within 7 V to 24 V. Connect the grounds together, and check whether the board's onboard 5 V regulator jumper should be used before powering the logic from the board.
