Will this connector fit 2.54 mm headers?
No. JST XH uses a 2.5 mm pitch, so it does not mate reliably with 2.54 mm (0.1 inch) headers or Dupont connectors. Use a matching XH header on your board.
Do I need a special tool to attach the wires?
JST XH housings use crimp contacts, so the wires must be terminated with suitable crimp terminals and a crimping tool before inserting them into the housing.
