Frequently asked questions
Can I drive it directly from an Arduino 5V pin?
Not reliably. The gate threshold can be up to 4 V and the on-resistance is specified at a 10 V gate drive, so a 5 V logic output will not fully enhance it. Use a logic-level MOSFET, or a gate driver or transistor stage that provides about 10 V to the gate.
Do I need a flyback diode when switching a motor or relay with it?
Yes. Inductive loads such as DC motors and relay coils generate a high voltage spike when switched off. Place a flyback (freewheeling) diode across the load, with its cathode toward the positive supply, to protect the MOSFET.
