Frequently asked questions
What input voltage do I need?
The input must be higher than 1.8 V by the dropout voltage, which is roughly 1.1 V to 1.2 V at full load according to the AMS1117 datasheet. A 3.3 V or 5 V input is typical.
Does it need a heatsink?
A linear regulator dissipates (Vin minus Vout) multiplied by the load current as heat. At light loads it is fine on its own, but at high current or high input voltage, add copper area on the PCB or a heatsink.
