Can I use it instead of a 1/4 W 1 kΩ resistor?
Electrically yes, since the resistance is the same and the higher power rating adds margin. However, the 5 W body is physically much larger, so check the board space and clearance before substituting.
How do I know the power my resistor must dissipate?
Calculate the power as P = V²/R or P = I²×R, where V is the voltage across the resistor, I is the current through it and R is the resistance. Choose a resistor whose power rating is comfortably above the calculated value.
