Frequently asked questions
How do I wire a matrix keypad to a microcontroller?
A matrix keypad connects rows and columns instead of each key having its own pin. A 4x4 keypad uses 8 pins in total (4 rows and 4 columns). Each row is driven as an output and each column is read as an input while scanning the keys.
Does it need software debouncing?
Contact bounce is rated up to 5 ms. Adding a short software delay or debounce check, commonly in the range of about 10 to 20 ms, prevents a single press from being counted multiple times.
